Friday ,18 of May 2012

Dublin
Dublin  is the capital and most populous city of Ireland. The English name for the city is derived from the Irish name Dubhlinn, meaning "black pool". Dublin is situated near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and the centre of the Dublin Region.

My diary :
In the aiport of Dublin you can take a taxi or a bus to go to the city. I buy a return ticket in the Bus "Aircoach" (it cost 12 euros).
In 15 minutes more or less I arrive to my hotel . Today I don´t have much time to visit the city because is a bit late and is raining, but I would like to see where is Houston Station. Tomorrow very early I have to take a train to visit Ring of Kerry.

Today I have though visit Dublin ,so will be better have a great Irish Breakfast :

Near to my hotel I have the Writters Museum . Ireland had great writters such as : Oscar Wilde,Bram Stoker,James Joyce,Jonathan Swift...

There are some different stories about  the history behind the colorful doors in Dublin :

After the death of the queen (i believe it was Queen Elizabeth, but I don't quite remember) England ordered the citizens of Ireland (which was still under british rule) to paint all of their doors black in mourning of the queen. The Irish rebelled and painted their doors bright colors, and the tradition has stuck.

There is also a story that the women were tired of their husbands going in the wrong doors when they were
drunk, going up the wrong stairs, into the wrong bedroom and sleeping with the wrong woman so the
painted the doors different colours to help them distinguish between them.

The house of Oscar Wilde :

And the park where Oscar Wilde wrote :

And finally I begin to walk to Temple Bar :

And finally  I come to Hard Rock Dublin

While I was walking I can listen a beautiful song and.... oh my god! I know this song,is the melody Pachelbel Canon in D .

I get up thinking about Cliff´s Moher. I have read that when the weather is foggy the landscapes are not beautiful there,so I hope that today be a great and sunny day ^^
I take a train in Houston Station with destiny Limerick, where I will visit Bunratty´s castle .
Alongside the castle is an extensive folk park, particularly popular with families, tourists and schools.
A glimpse into Irish life in the 19th century: This features reconstructions of historical cottages and buildings, recreating the general feel of the 19th century with a period style village main street. Old tools, furniture and artifacts are displayed, with the village kept alive by some inhabited shops, an old home bakery and peat fires in cottages. The Folk Park excels at showing life in all classes from around Ireland throughout recent history. In the village, you can see the school, post office, shops, and enjoy drinking at a working pub.

It´s a beautiful place and there you can imagine how the people lived .
And now is time to eat something and the best place is the famous Gus O´connor´s Pub:

When I finish this delicious food I take the bus again to visit Cliff´s Moher :

Today has been a fantastic day. I feel luckely because the weather has been sunny and I have seen the beautiful cliffs.

Wdnesday,23 of May 2012

Today is my last day here in Dublin,so I get up early to begin walking around this beautiful city.
Now I´m going to visit the harbor :

And now to visit Trinity College University :

And of course the amazing library :

In the library you can see the famous Book of Kell:

The Book of Kells  is an illuminated manuscript Gospel book in Latin, containing the four Gospels of the New Testament together with various prefatory texts and tables. It was created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier. The text of the Gospels is largely drawn from the Vulgate, although it also includes several passages drawn from the earlier versions of the Bible known as the Vetus Latina. It is a masterwork of Western calligraphy and represents the pinnacle of Insular illumination. It is also widely regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure.

The illustrations and ornamentation of the Book of Kells surpass that of other Insular Gospel books in extravagance and complexity. The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with the ornate swirling motifs typical of Insular art. Figures of humans, animals and mythical beasts, together with Celtic knots and interlacing patterns in vibrant colours, enliven the manuscript's pages. Many of these minor decorative elements are imbued with Christian symbolism and so further emphasise the themes of the major illustrations.

The manuscript today comprises 340 folios and, since 1953, has been bound in four volumes. The leaves are on high-quality calf vellum, and the unprecedentedly elaborate ornamentation that covers them includes ten full-page illustrations and text pages that are vibrant with decorated initials and interlinear miniatures and mark the furthest extension of the anti-classical and energetic qualities of Insular art. The Insular majuscule script of the text itself appears to be the work of at least three different scribes. The lettering is in iron gall ink, and the colours used were derived from a wide range of substances, many of which were imports from distant lands.

The manuscript takes its name from the Abbey of Kells that was its home for centuries. Today, it is on permanent display at the Trinity College Library, Dublin. The library usually displays two of the current four volumes at a time, one showing a major illustration and the other showing typical text pages.

Perhaps someday I´ll have a library like this ^^.  I love books .
And now I continue visiting Dublin
